MissionJPII Latino hat

The Missionaries of the Gospel are a group of lay people from various different countries who feel called to follow Christ according to the charism and spirituality of Pope St. John Paul II (JPII). ApostolateNatalie Thomas addresses a group of women on their feminine genius

        • Evangelization: Finding effective means (e.g. through personal relationships, pilgrimages, theatre, music, poetry, youth ministry, supporting families, a dignity museum) to help people of different languages and cultures to experience the Lord and His Good News for them. For MGs this proclamation of the Gospel involves helping others to not only see God for who He is, but also to see themselves and discover their dignity and vocation (Redemptor Hominis 12), addressing both the current crisis in faith (spiritual poverty) and the blindness to the value of the human person that is so pervasive nowadays.
        • Formation to help others integrate the faith Rosary Groupthey feel attracted to. Such as courses (in Scripture, Philosophical Anthropology, Spiritual Theology, Theology of the Body, Marriage Preparation etc.), prayer groups, retreats, chaplaincy, spiritual direction and counselling. This addresses the disconnect that many experience between their desire to be close to God (and even their knowledge of the faith); and the everyday problems they struggle with.
          • Building Community in a world when we are more connected and less intimate- helping others to imitate and experience the profound reality of the Blessed Trinity. Read more…

Religion Today John Paul II American Pope Charism

What makes an MG doing the above different from others in the Church is that the work is animated by the charism of St. John Paul II whose personal, joyful, hopeful, propositional authentic, experiential and ‘heuristic’ approach proved to be effective in the modern era.

 SpiritualityTrinity icon

The spirituality of Saint John Paul II and therefore of the MGs is Christocentric, Trinitarian (‘spirituality of communion’), Marian, has a strong focus on Scripture, Redemption and Mercy, and an emphasis on developing our interior life- becoming more contemplative, even if we are active. History

Archbishop Costelloe SDB and Archbishop (Emeritus) Hickey

Archbishop Costelloe SDB and Archbishop (Emeritus) Hickey

The inspiration for the MGs came in 2004. Pope John Paul II was notified in the same year and he wrote an encouraging letter to the founder of the group. The foundation of the group was established in Perth in 2007 by Archbishop Barry James Hickey and the first few members seeking to be JPII Sisters undertook a period of formation which included spending a year in Poland.

This continued until Archbishop Hickey retired in 2012 and Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB was installed as the new Archbishop of Perth. With new ideas and experience in religious life, Archbishop Costelloe suggested the group start afresh. So committed to the vision of the MGs and buoyed by the graces of Pope John Paul II’s Canonization, a group of lay people have started again. The focus now is on building the lay community and carrying out the work of the MGs. In time, it is hoped there will be sisters, brothers and priests.

                              2. Meeting once a month with any members who are in their region to pray and support one another
                              3. Praying a simple prayer for the MG community each day
                              4. Attending an hour of adoration once a week where possible and an annual retreat
                              5. They were given a JPII crucifix and handbook upon beginning the program

This group included married and single people from Italy (Como), the USA (Texas, Virginia, Maryland), and Australia (Canberra, Perth). The group was led by a consecrated woman from Perth who has been involved since 2004. Many of these candidates continue with the MGs to this day.
